Nigeria mourns as 1980 AFCON hero Henry Nwosu dies at 61
Nigeria’s football community has been thrown into mourning following the death of former Super Eagles midfielder Henry Nwosu, one of the heroes of Nigeria’s historic 1980 continental triumph.
Nwosu reportedly passed away at about 4:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after spending five days in intensive care battling for his life.
Fondly nicknamed the “Youngest Millionaire,” Nwosu was the youngest member of the Nigerian squad that won the country’s first ever Africa Cup of Nations title at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Lagos.
His death has left former teammates, football stakeholders, and fans across the country in deep grief, as many remember his immense contribution to Nigerian football both at club and national team levels.
During his playing days, Nwosu was widely admired for his creativity, vision, and midfield intelligence, qualities that helped shape the success of the national team in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
His role in the historic AFCON victory under the legendary coach Otto Glória remains one of the defining moments of his career.
The 1980 AFCON winning team also featured notable stars such as Christian Chukwu, Segun Odegbami, and Muda Lawal, who together delivered Nigeria’s first continental crown.
Tributes are already pouring in from across the football world as colleagues and admirers celebrate the life and legacy of a man many regard as one of the finest midfield talents produced by Nigeria.
Nwosu’s passing marks another painful loss for the generation of players who laid the foundation for Nigeria’s football success on the African continent.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family in the coming days.
