Nigeria secures hosting rights for 2027 African Beach Volleyball Championship
Nigeria has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2027 Africa Beach Volleyball Championship, marking another significant milestone in the National Sports Commission's (NSC) efforts to establish the country as a premier destination for international sporting events.
The championship, which will be staged in Lagos, further strengthens Nigeria's growing partnership with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA). The development follows the recent agreement that confirmed Nigeria as host of the second edition of the African School Games, also scheduled for 2027.
Speaking in Abuja during the announcement, ANOCA President, Mustapha Berraf, praised Nigeria's renewed commitment to sports development, describing the country as one of Africa's emerging leaders in the sector. He attributed the progress to the ongoing reforms spearheaded by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade.
Berraf said ANOCA was pleased to deepen its partnership with Nigeria by awarding the hosting rights for the continental beach volleyball championship.
He commended the Federal Government's recent investments in sports, noting that Nigeria's impressive record in successfully hosting major international competitions influenced ANOCA's decision.
Recalling the country's swift organisation of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Africa U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta after accepting hosting responsibilities at short notice, Berraf said the feat demonstrated Nigeria's capacity to deliver world-class sporting events.
According to him, such achievements reflect a deliberate and sustained commitment to sports development.
Reacting to the announcement, NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko described the hosting rights as another step towards implementing the Commission's sports development agenda. He said attracting international competitions remains a key strategy for expanding Nigeria's sports economy while showcasing the country's organisational capabilities.
Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, credited the country's recent hosting successes to the strong support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that the administration has demonstrated an unprecedented commitment to sports development.
Meanwhile, Nigeria could further strengthen its position on the continental sporting stage, with discussions at an advanced stage for the country to host Africa's Olympic qualification events ahead of the 2030 Olympic Games.
ANOCA and the African Union are currently exploring plans to stage the qualifiers in Nigeria, a move expected to reduce the financial and logistical burden on African nations that often travel outside the continent to secure Olympic qualification.
