Court adjourns suit against FCT Minister over abandoned stadium project

Justice M.G. Umar of Court 5, Federal High Court, Abuja, has adjourned until October 5, 2026, the hearing of a suit filed by the Gwagwalada Football Stakeholders against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) over the alleged failure to provide information on abandoned sports infrastructure projects across the territory.

The matter, which came up for hearing on Thursday, was postponed after proceedings, with the court fixing October 5 for the continuation of the case.

The suit, which was first mentioned in March 2026, had earlier been adjourned to allow the FCT Minister to enter legal representation. The Gwagwalada Football Stakeholders are represented by Babatunde Akintade Legal Consult.

Speaking with journalists after the court session, lead counsel, Babatunde Akintade, said the suit seeks an order compelling the FCT Minister to disclose comprehensive information on abandoned stadium projects across the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory.

"This matter was slated for hearing at Federal High Court 5 involving the FCT Minister and the Gwagwalada Football Stakeholders over abandoned stadiums in the six Area Councils. We are asking the court to direct the Minister to provide all information relating to these abandoned stadium projects," Akintade said.

He expressed optimism despite the adjournment, stating that the stakeholders remain hopeful of securing a favourable judgment.

"The matter has now been adjourned to October 5, 2026, for further hearing. We are hopeful that at the next sitting, the court will make a declaration in our favour and football stakeholders across the FCT will emerge victorious," he said.

The legal action seeks to compel the FCT Administration to disclose information concerning sports infrastructure projects that have reportedly been abandoned across the six Area Councils. According to the stakeholders, the prolonged abandonment of these facilities has negatively affected grassroots football development and deprived young people of opportunities to participate in sports.

Several football stakeholders from Gwagwalada and other parts of the FCT attended the court proceedings in solidarity, reaffirming their demand for greater transparency and accountability in the management of sports infrastructure across the Federal Capital Territory.
