Nigeria’s Falconets will face Colombia on Sunday in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

The last-eight encounter is scheduled for 3:00pm Polish time (2:00pm Nigerian time) at the Stadion Miejski ŁKS in Łódź. FIFA’s official tournament schedule confirms the fixture as Match 48 of the competition. 

Nigeria booked their place in the quarter-finals with an impressive 3-0 victory over England in the Round of 16 on Thursday.

Tosin Rafiu opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei doubled the advantage two minutes into the second half. Mary Mamudu completed the scoring in the 73rd minute.

Captain and goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma also played a key role, saving Rachel Maltby’s penalty when England were still within striking distance. FIFA subsequently named Akekoromowei the Visa Player of the Match. 

The victory followed Nigeria’s remarkable 10-1 demolition of New Caledonia in their final Group F match. The Falconets had earlier lost 2-0 to Spain and drawn 0-0 with China PR before recovering to finish second in the group. 

Colombia, meanwhile, reached the last eight after eliminating hosts Poland with a 1-0 victory in the Round of 16. An 89th-minute own goal by Martyna Bartczak settled the contest and sent the South Americans through. 

The Colombian side had earlier finished third in Group E after beating Costa Rica 3-1, drawing 0-0 with Portugal and losing 3-0 to defending champions Korea DPR. They subsequently stunned hosts Poland to reach the quarter-finals.

Sunday’s encounter will be a test of Nigeria’s attacking momentum against a Colombian team that has shown an ability to remain competitive in tight matches.

For Falconets coach Moses Aduku, the focus has already shifted away from the England victory. The coach warned his players against dwelling on their impressive Round of 16 performance.

“The English team is a very good side, and I think they underrated us. They never believed that we could play up to this level,” Aduku said after the England match.

He added: “This game is gone. Let’s have a short celebration because we have the next game to play, so let’s focus on the next one.” 

Nigeria are appearing in the quarter-finals of the U-20 Women’s World Cup for the ninth time, joining the United States on that mark. Only Germany, with 10 quarter-final appearances, have reached the last eight more often. 

The Falconets have also reached the final twice, finishing runners-up in 2010 and 2014. Their most recent semi-final appearance came in 2014, meaning a victory over Colombia would take Nigeria back into the last four for the first time in 12 years. 

Colombia have never been eliminated before the quarter-final stage in their four appearances at the tournament, making Sunday’s encounter another significant test for both teams.
