Nigeria vs Burkina Faso: Flamingos seek third straight WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup win
Nigeria’s Flamingos will look to maintain their perfect start to the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup when they face Burkina Faso on Monday, September 21, in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
The encounter is scheduled for 3:00pm Nigerian time at the Lycée Scientifique in Yamoussoukro, with the Flamingos seeking another victory as they continue their preparations for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
Nigeria have made an impressive start to the regional tournament, recording victories over Niger Republic and Ghana in their opening two matches.
The Flamingos opened their campaign with a 5-0 victory over Niger on September 16 before producing another strong performance to defeat Ghana’s Black Maidens 4-2 in their second fixture.
The victory over Ghana was particularly significant as Nigeria maintained their winning run despite playing the final stages with 10 players following Elizabeth Adesuyi’s 59th-minute red card.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring against Ghana before captain Harmony Chidi doubled Nigeria’s advantage in first-half stoppage time. Mary Dunstan and Kaosarat Akanji were also on target, while Ghana scored twice through Seidatu Wahab and Gloria Ameaa.
The result left Nigeria with six points from two matches and at the top of the standings, while the Flamingos had scored nine goals across their opening two games.
Burkina Faso, meanwhile, enter the contest looking to respond after suffering a 4-0 defeat to Ghana in their opening match before recording a 1-0 victory over hosts Côte d’Ivoire.
The Burkina Faso fixture therefore presents another opportunity for coach Hakeem Busari to assess his squad against different opposition while continuing to build the team’s tactical and competitive readiness ahead of the World Cup.
Nigeria’s impressive attacking form has been boosted by the consistency of captain Harmony Chidi and Mary Dunstan, who have both found the net in the Flamingos’ opening two matches.
The regional championship is serving as an important preparation platform for Nigeria ahead of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. The Flamingos are using the competition to test players, improve their cohesion and expose the squad to competitive pressure before the global tournament.
After Burkina Faso, Nigeria are scheduled to face hosts Côte d’Ivoire on September 24 before concluding their campaign against Togo on September 27.
