Jose Peseiro draws the line on Super Eagles' AFCON 2025 finish

Former Super Eagles boss José Peseiro has reignited debate over Nigeria’s recent continental outings, insisting that anything short of an Africa Cup of Nations final falls below the country’s true standard.

Speaking from Portugal, the Portuguese tactician subtly contrasted his tenure with the current era under Eric Chelle, following Nigeria’s third place finish at the 2026 AFCON in Morocco.

While the latest squad earned admiration for their attacking flair, Peseiro believes style must never overshadow substance.

Under his leadership at the 2023 tournament, Nigeria reached the final for the first time in over a decade, eventually losing 2–1 to the Ivory Coast national football team. For Peseiro, that run remains the benchmark.

He argued that representing a football powerhouse like Nigeria comes with a non-negotiable expectation competing for, and reaching, the final.

In his view, podium finishes are commendable, but they do not carry the same weight as a place in the title decider.

Peseiro’s remarks underline a broader conversation about ambition versus progress, as the Super Eagles continue to rebuild while balancing entertaining football with the ultimate goal of continental dominance.
