FCT Sports Department begins screening of aspirants ahead of 2026 Associations Elections
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sports Department has commenced the screening of candidates seeking elective positions in various sports associations ahead of the 2026 elections.
The exercise, organised by the FCT Steering Committee, began on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the Conference Hall of the FCT Sports Department in Abuja.
Officials disclosed that the screening process will last for five days as part of efforts to ensure credible and competent leadership across sports associations in the territory.
On the opening day, aspirants from eight associations — athletics, basketball, table tennis, badminton, golf, boxing, gymnastics, and handball — appeared before the screening panel.
The exercise continued on Friday with candidates from judo, karate, and scrabble undergoing assessment.
According to the timetable released by the committee, screening will resume on Monday for aspirants from archery, cricket, taekwondo, traditional sports, kickboxing, tennis, hockey, and darts.
The process is expected to conclude on Tuesday with candidates from rugby, wrestling, baseball, parasports, and volleyball.
The screening committee is chaired by Mr. Godwin Bamigboye, while Mr. Agbor Clinton serves as secretary.
Other members of the committee include Dr. Charles Agadu, Mr. Iyiola Ogundele, Dr. Mrs. Whoba Esther, Hon. Albert Atiwurcha, Niyi Busari, Uche Nwudoh, Adakole Jones, and Dave Jegede.
Officials stated that the screening exercise is focused on evaluating the qualifications, competence, and leadership capacity of aspirants seeking to manage the various sports associations.
Successful candidates will emerge as board members of their respective associations following the elections, the date of which is yet to be announced.
