Abeokuta to host Remo Stars and Kwara United continental campaigns

Nigerian champions Remo Stars and Federation Cup winners Kwara United have received clearance to play their first-round CAF games at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.

For the Sky Blue Stars, whose Ikenne base remains under renovation, Abeokuta has already served as home in the ongoing 2025/26 NPFL season. Daniel Ogunmodede’s men will now continue that tradition in Africa, starting with their CAF Champions League preliminary clash against Comoros side U.S. Zilimadjou at the same venue.

In a unique twist, Zilimadjou have also opted to use the upgraded Abeokuta facility as their adopted home for the return fixture, further underlining the stadium’s readiness. Remo Stars will be aiming to cross the first hurdle of the Champions League for the very first time. Success would set up a mouthwatering clash with South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns in the next round.

The tie kicks off with the first leg on Sunday, September 21, before the return leg on Friday, September 26. Both games are scheduled for 4 pm.

Meanwhile, Kwara United, drawn against Ghana’s Asante Kotoko in the CAF Confederation Cup, will also base their continental games in Abeokuta. Despite efforts by the Kwara State Government to upgrade the Ilorin Township Stadium, the ground failed to meet CAF’s required standards.

Tunde Sanni’s Harmony Boys will first travel to Kumasi for the opening leg against the Porcupine Warriors this Sunday, before welcoming the Ghanaians to the MKO Abiola Sports Arena on Sunday, September 28, with kickoff set for 4pm.
