Samuel Ogazi rewrites history at SEC Indoors
Nigeria’s Samuel Ogazi delivered a performance for the ages at the SEC Indoor Championships, powering to victory in the men’s 400 metres with a sensational 44.72 seconds to claim his first NCAA conference title indoors.
The University of Alabama standout was simply untouchable, and his electrifying run carried historic weight. Ogazi’s time erased the African indoor record of 44.74 seconds, set last year by fellow Nigerian Ezekiel Nathaniel, and elevated him to the status of the 10th fastest man in history over 400m indoors.
The significance of the moment stretched even further. Ogazi’s 44.72 also brought down a 15-year-old University of Alabama school record, previously held by Olympic champion and Crimson Tide legend Kirani James. James, one of the most revered figures in the event, had set the benchmark during his illustrious collegiate career in Tuscaloosa.
Exploding from the blocks and maintaining a ferocious rhythm through the stagger, Ogazi surged off the final bend before tearing down the home straight, stopping the clock to spark celebrations as the scale of his achievement became instantly apparent.
Arkansas’ Jordan Pierre, winner of the other section in 45.06 seconds, finished second overall, while Georgia freshman Jonathan Simms impressed with a personal best of 45.23 seconds to complete the podium.
The record-breaking night crowned Ogazi as SEC indoor champion for the first time and etched his name permanently into Alabama’s storied history a powerful statement from one of the brightest young talents in world sprinting.
