Senegal appeals CAF decision to CAS over controversial AFCON final ruling
Senegal have officially taken their dispute with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), seeking to overturn a decision that stripped them of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and awarded it to Morocco.
The controversy stems from the January 18 final, where Senegal initially secured a 1–0 victory over Morocco after extra time. However, the match took a dramatic turn in stoppage time when a penalty was awarded to Morocco, prompting Senegalese players to walk off the pitch in protest. The stoppage lasted 17 minutes before play resumed, triggering a formal complaint from the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football.
Following a review, CAF’s Appeals Committee ruled that Senegal’s actions violated tournament regulations, specifically Article 82, which states that any team refusing to continue play or leaving the pitch without the referee’s consent forfeits the match. On that basis, CAF overturned the result and awarded Morocco a 3–0 victory, handing them their first AFCON title in nearly 50 years.
The ruling has sparked widespread debate across African football, with critics questioning both the severity of the punishment and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Senegal, however, has maintained a measured stance.
A member of the Senegalese Football Federation’s executive committee, Moussa Mbaye, confirmed that the appeal has now been formally filed with CAS, emphasizing that the decision was made with careful consideration rather than emotion.
“We don’t act with emotion, but in a very cold and very lucid manner to best serve the interests of Senegal,” Mbaye stated.
CAS will now examine the case, focusing on both the legal interpretation of CAF’s rules and whether proper procedures were followed in reaching the decision. As the highest authority in global sports arbitration, its ruling will be final and binding.
The outcome could have far-reaching implications—not only determining the rightful winner of the disputed AFCON final, but also shaping how similar incidents are handled in future continental competitions.
