Tobi Amusan, Favour Ashe leads Nigeria's 45-man charge for CAA Championship in Ghana
Nigeria’s quest for continental athletics glory has gathered momentum as the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) unveiled a formidable 45-athlete squad for the 2026 CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Ghana.
Leading the charge is world record holder Tobi Amusan, who headlines a star-studded Team Nigeria set to compete from May 12 to 17 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon, Accra.
The Nigerian contingent, made up of 25 women and 20 men, blends proven experience with exciting young talents as the country looks to make a strong statement on the African stage.
As expected, all eyes will be on Amusan in the women’s 100m hurdles, where she will line up alongside Adaobi Tabugbo and Janet Sunday in an event Nigeria traditionally dominates.
In the women’s sprint events, Rosemary Chukwuma spearheads the 100m and 4x100m relay team. She will combine with Miracle Ezechukwu, Maria Thompson Omokwe, and Tejiri Ugoh in what promises to be one of Nigeria’s strongest relay setups heading into the championships.
Veteran quarter-miler Patience Okon George is also listed for both the 400m and relay events, while field event stars Ruth Usoro and Oyesade Olatoye will compete in the long jump and hammer throw respectively.
Obiageri Amaechi will fly Nigeria’s flag in the discus throw, with Jessica Oji and Divine Oladipupo featuring in the shot put events.
On the men’s side, speedster Favour Ashe leads Nigeria’s 100m and 4x100m relay team alongside Enoch Adegoke, Chidera Ezeakor, and Tejiri Godwin.
The men’s 200m squad features Usheoritse Itsekiri, Badmus Gafari, and James Taiwo Emmanuel, while the 400m and relay events will see Emmanuel Ojeli, Samson Nathaniel and Chidi Okezie represent the green and white colours.
Nigeria’s field event hopes will rest on some familiar names, including African shot put giant Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, long jumper Romeo Bernard, decathlete Jami Schlueter and javelin thrower Adams Samuel Kure.
Having finished third at the last edition in Douala, Cameroon, Team Nigeria will head to Accra determined to climb higher on the medal table and reaffirm its status as one of Africa’s athletics powerhouses.
