Nigeria’s Future Eagles will face Rwanda in their next placement fixture at the 2026 FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan, as they seek to recover from their defeat to Benin Republic on Thursday.
The Nigerian youngsters are scheduled to meet Rwanda, who lost 2-1 to Scotland, in a match determining positions between 73rd and 80th in the tournament’s overall placement standings.
Victory would send the Future Eagles into the placement semi-finals, where they would face either Japan or Chile as the competition enters its concluding stages.
Nigeria’s next assignment comes after a difficult outing against Benin, whose 6-3 victory ended the Future Eagles’ hopes of winning the Tier C title.
Despite scoring three goals through captain Timothy Ijach, who netted twice, and Wisdom Boniface, Nigeria were unable to contain their West African neighbours, who scored six times to advance.
The defeat followed an encouraging 7-0 victory over New Caledonia, in which Ijach scored a hat-trick and Abdulsalam Muhammad added a brace.
The contrasting results have highlighted both the attacking potential of the Nigerian youngsters and the defensive improvements required as they continue their international development.
Rwanda will also be seeking a response after their narrow defeat to Scotland, setting up another opportunity for both sides to finish the tournament on a positive note.
The placement matches remain important under the tournament’s format, which allows participating teams to continue competing for final positions rather than ending their campaigns immediately after elimination from a particular tier.
The inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival is being staged in Baku, with matches played in an eight-a-side format comprising two 20-minute halves.
The immediate task for Nigeria will be to respond positively against Rwanda, improve their performance after the Benin setback and secure a place in the placement semi-finals.
A victory would keep the Future Eagles in contention to finish the competition strongly, with Japan or Chile awaiting the winner in the next round.
