VIP & Partners Volleyball Club delivered one of the biggest surprises of the ongoing Customs Comptroller-General (CGC) Volleyball Premier League on Thursday in Abuja, stunning former champions CNS Spikers with a 3-1 victory in a captivating women’s match.
The eagerly awaited encounter lived up to its billing as both sides showcased quality, determination, and resilience in a fiercely contested battle.
CNS Spikers drew first blood, taking the opening set 25-21 with a commanding display of attacking prowess and disciplined defending that underlined their championship pedigree.
Undeterred, VIP & Partners responded strongly in the second set. Displaying remarkable composure in crucial moments, they edged a tense contest 26-24 to level the match and shift the momentum in their favour.
Buoyed by growing confidence, VIP & Partners maintained their intensity in the third set. Their teamwork and consistency paid off as they secured a narrow 25-23 win to move ahead for the first time in the match.
The fourth set was equally dramatic, with CNS Spikers battling hard to force a decider. However, VIP & Partners held their nerve when it mattered most, claiming another 25-23 victory to complete a memorable comeback and secure a statement win.
The result sends a strong message to the rest of the field, with VIP & Partners emerging as serious contenders for the league title.
Reacting after the victory, VIP & Partners Team Manager, Samuel Onikeku, praised the players for their commitment and the steady progress of the team.
“We have a quality team and carefully selected these players because we believe in their talent. With a strong coaching crew and continuous investment, we knew this team could challenge and defeat any opponent,” he said.
Onikeku noted that the team’s recent achievements, including silver-medal finishes in previous championships, justify the continued support from sponsors and management.
