Honest Ahanor waits in wing as Italy showcase Nigeria eligible U-21 talent

Nigeria’s pursuit of emerging dual national talents received a mixed update as several eligible players featured for Italy’s U21 side, while top target Honest Ahanor remained on the bench during a dominant outing.

In the 4–0 victory over North Macedonia in a European U21 Championship qualifier, Italy showcased the depth of its squad, with Nigeria eligible trio Luca Koleosho, Jeff Ekhator and Michael Kayode all playing roles under coach Silvio Baldini.

Koleosho and Ekhator started the match, with the latter getting on the scoresheet as the Azzurrini maintained full control. Kayode was introduced at the start of the second half, contributing to the team’s attacking momentum as they sealed a convincing win.

However, it was Ahanor’s absence from the pitch that stood out from a Nigerian perspective.

The Atalanta defender’s non-involvement means he is yet to be provisionally cap tied to Italy, keeping the door open for a potential switch to represent the Super Eagles without the need for immediate clearance from FIFA.

Italy had earlier taken the lead through Cher Ndour before Luca Lipani extended the advantage after the break. Ekhator added a third, while Seydou Fini wrapped up the victory from the penalty spot.

All eyes will now be on Italy’s next fixture against Sweden on March 31, where Ahanor could finally make his debut an appearance that may complicate Nigeria’s chances of securing his international future.
