17 Super Eagles begin first training ahead of Russia friendly
Nigeria's Super Eagles have begun preparations for Tuesday's international friendly against Russia with their first training session in Nizhny Novgorod on Saturday.
Seventeen players took part in the opening session as the team settled into their base ahead of the encounter at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.
Among those involved were experienced winger Moses Simon, who has 101 international caps, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, defenders Benjamin Fredricks and Emmanuel Fernandez, as well as forwards Kelechi Iheanacho and Akor Adams.
Head coach Eric Chelle and his technical crew are scheduled to oversee two more training sessions on Sunday and Monday as the Super Eagles fine-tune their plans for the meeting with the Russian national team.
The Nigerian delegation travelled to Russia on Turkish Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines flights, with different groups connecting through Istanbul and Addis Ababa before arriving in Moscow. They then continued their journey to Nizhny Novgorod.
Nigeria and Russia last faced each other on June 6, 2025, in an entertaining friendly at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. The match ended 1-1 after Russia took the lead through a Semi Ajayi own goal, before Tolu Arokodare equalised for Nigeria.
Tuesday's fixture will give Chelle another opportunity to assess his players and test different options as the Super Eagles continue their preparations for upcoming competitive engagements.
