Alleged Saudi Meeting: Sule linked to Atiku support plot against Tinubu - Report
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has been linked to an alleged political arrangement with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election, according to an exclusive report by Peoples Gazette Nigeria.
The report claimed that Mr Sule, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), held a private meeting with Mr Abubakar in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, during the 2026 lesser hajj.
Citing sources familiar with the development, Gazette Nigeria reported that the meeting took place at the Conrad Jabal Omar Hotel on March 11 and lasted about two hours during iftar.
A source was quoted as saying: “Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa met with Atiku Abubakar in Saudi Arabia weeks ago. He had a two-hour meeting with Atiku at Conrad Jabal Omar Hotel in Makka on Wednesday, 11th of March, 2026. The meeting was held at night during iftar.”
According to the publication, discussions at the meeting allegedly centred on political collaboration ahead of 2027, including support for Mr Abubakar’s presidential ambition against incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Another source told Gazette Nigeria: “(During the meeting, Mr Sule) pledged to ensure that Atiku wins Nasarawa in the 2027 presidential election. They agreed on returning power to the north.”
The report further suggested that the governor’s alleged move may reflect broader political calculations within the APC. One insider was quoted as saying: “putting his eggs in more than one basket.”
While specifics of any financial commitment were not disclosed, the report indicated that the extent of support allegedly promised remains unclear.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation yielded no definitive responses, as aides to both figures distanced themselves from the claims.
Mr Abubakar’s media aide, Paul Ibe, told Gazette Nigeria: “I can only confirm to you what I know. I’m not aware of a meeting of that nature. What I can confirm to you is that indeed, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar travelled for the lesser hajj; and he returned to the country on Saturday; that much I can tell you.”
Similarly, the spokesperson to Governor Sule, Ibrahim Addra, said: “I’m not aware of the meeting… But I know that the governor attended the lesser hajj.”
The development, if confirmed, could signal emerging fault lines within the ruling APC as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of 2027.
An unnamed official, quoted in the report, expressed concern over potential internal dissent within the party:
“It’s been our concern lately that some of our party’s governors and senators might betray the president if Atiku Abubakar becomes the candidate of the ADC.”
According to Peoples Gazette Nigeria, the full scope of the alleged political engagement, and whether similar alignments exist within the ruling party, remains uncertain.
