Calvin Bassey ruled out as Super Eagles tweak ahead of friendlies

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey will play no part in Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies against Iran and Jordan in Turkey after being ruled out with a back injury.

The Fulham centre-back, who was one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the last AFCON in Morocco, had been named in the 23-man squad and was widely expected to anchor the defence. His withdrawal now leaves a gap in the backline, forcing head coach Eric Chelle to rethink his options.

Chelle has handed an opportunity to another defender, with Trabzonspor’s Chibuike Nwaiwu in to replace Calvin Bassey

In Bassey’s absence, the focus in camp has intensified, with training sessions built around improving team shape, sharpening pressing patterns, and strengthening on-field chemistry. With two games scheduled in quick succession, the technical crew are keen to establish early rhythm while also assessing both regular starters and emerging talents.

Nigeria will face Iran on Friday before taking on Jordan days later, in fixtures that will serve as an early test of the squad’s depth and tactical readiness.
