Adebayor, Diouf, Appiah lead African legends' invasion of Lagos
Lagos is set for a star-studded football extravaganza as some of Africa’s greatest football icons prepare to storm the city for the Legends Football Game scheduled for Sunday, November 8, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.
Leading the African Legends contingent are former African Footballer of the Year Emmanuel Adebayor, Senegalese sensation El-Hadji Diouf, Ivorian great Didier Zokora and former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah, all of whom enjoyed distinguished careers on the international stage.
The impressive African selection also boasts an array of celebrated former internationals, including Ghana’s John Paintsil and Anthony Baffoe, Senegal’s Khalilou Fadiga, Burkina Faso’s Aristide Bancé, Cameroon’s Rigobert Song and Alexandre Song. Zimbabwe will be represented by Peter Ndlovu and Benjani Mwaruwari, while former South African goalkeeper Brian Baloyi is also among the invited stars.
The African Legends will square up against a formidable selection of former Super Eagles stars drawn from Nigeria’s celebrated 1994 and 1996 generations in a special encounter designed to commemorate three decades since the country’s historic achievements in African football.
The event, organised by Toptier Sports Management in partnership with Afreximbank and CANEX, is aimed at celebrating the contributions of football icons whose exploits helped elevate African football and inspired millions across the continent.
Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Toptier Sports Management, Chichi Nwoko, said the gathering would provide a unique opportunity to celebrate the players who laid the foundation for African football’s global recognition.
“These are names that every football fan in Africa knows. We are proud to bring them to Lagos to honour the heroes of 1994 and 1996,” Nwoko said.
Football enthusiasts are expected to turn out in large numbers to witness the reunion of some of the continent’s most recognisable football personalities. Gates will open at 1:30pm, while fans unable to attend the encounter can watch the action live on NTA, AIT and Silverbird between 5pm and 7pm.
With Adebayor, Diouf, Appiah, Zokora and other African greats leading the charge, Lagos is preparing for an unforgettable afternoon of football nostalgia, celebration and a reunion of legends.
