Akeem Busari takes charge of Flamingos

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has ushered in a new chapter for its U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, with the appointment of Akeem Ishola Busari as Head Coach.

The decision, ratified by the NFF Executive Committee following a recommendation from its Technical and Development Committee, sees Busari step into one of the most important developmental roles in Nigerian women’s football.

He replaces long-serving coach Bankole Olowookere, whose tenure was marked by notable success, including guiding the Flamingos to a historic bronze medal finish at the 2022 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in India.

Busari arrives with a wealth of experience and a firm grasp of the women’s game in Nigeria, qualities the federation will hope translate into continued progress for the young national side.

His immediate assignment is clear and demanding: steer the Flamingos through the qualification race for the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. Nigeria’s campaign will begin in the next round, where they await the winner of the preliminary tie between Niger Republic and Guinea. The Flamingos will play the first leg away from home in the third week of next month.

Currently serving as Head Coach of Pacesetter Queens FC in Ibadan, Busari now faces the task of maintaining Nigeria’s strong pedigree at youth level while shaping the next generation of stars for the Super Falcons pipeline.
