Christantus Uche faces lenghty layoff with knee injury
Nigeria international midfielder Christantus Uche is set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines after sustaining a serious knee injury during Getafe's 1-0 pre-season defeat to AS Monaco, with reports indicating he may miss the entire 2026/27 campaign.
The 22 year old, who recently returned to Getafe following an unsuccessful loan spell at English Premier League club Crystal Palace, came on in the second half of the friendly before his outing was cut short by a horrific challenge.
Uche was caught by a high tackle from Monaco defender Christian Mawissa, whose reckless challenge earned him a straight red card. The Nigerian midfielder required lengthy treatment before being stretchered off, raising immediate fears over the severity of the injury.
Following the match, Getafe released an initial medical update stating that Uche had suffered a contusion to the kneecap of his right leg.
"After the first tests and clinical examination carried out by the club's medical services, Christantus Uche presents a contusion to the kneecap of his right leg, caused by the blow suffered during the match against AS Monaco," the club said in a statement.
However, subsequent medical assessments have revealed far more extensive damage than first anticipated. Reports indicate the midfielder sustained multiple tears to his knee ligaments and will require surgery.
The injury is expected to sideline Uche for a long time in 2026/27 season, dealing a major setback to both the player and Getafe as he looked to re-establish himself after returning from his loan spell in England.
