Coventry City snap Frank Onyeka on loan from Brentford
Coventry City have confirmed the signing of Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka from Premier League side Brentford.
The Sky Blues announced the deal in an official statement released on Monday evening, confirming that Onyeka has joined the club on loan, with an obligation to make the move permanent should Coventry secure promotion to the Premier League.
The 28-year-old arrives at the CBS Arena after spending nearly four years with Brentford, whom he joined in the summer of 2021. During his time with the Bees, Onyeka made 87 appearances across all competitions, including 75 outings in the Premier League.
Onyeka played an important role in Brentford’s rise and consolidation in England’s top flight and was part of the squad that finished ninth in the 2022–23 season, the club’s highest-ever Premier League finish.
Before moving to England, the energetic midfielder enjoyed a successful spell in Denmark with FC Midtjylland, where he won two Danish Superliga titles, lifted the 2018–19 Danish Cup, and gained valuable European experience in both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League.
Last season, Onyeka continued to build top-level experience during a loan spell with Bundesliga side Augsburg, making 31 appearances in Germany’s top division.
On the international scene, Onyeka has earned 41 caps for Nigeria and featured prominently for the Super Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the team finished third.
Speaking after completing his move, Onyeka expressed his excitement at joining Coventry as they push for promotion.
“I’m very happy to be here,” he said. “I’m a strong midfielder, I’m a winner and I always want to fight for my teammates. My aim is to give 100 per cent, bring my experience and help the team get promoted to the Premier League and bring glory to the city again. I’m very excited to get going and I’m ready to give my all for Coventry.”
Onyeka will now work under head coach Frank Lampard, with the former Premier League star having taken charge of Coventry in November 2024. Since his appointment, Lampard has recorded 35 wins in 66 matches, and the partnership could prove key as the club targets a return to the top flight.
