Ikorodu City back to NPFL summit as Matchday 25 delivers drama

Ikorodu City returned to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League standings with a hard-fought 2–0 victory over Niger Tornadoes at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, on Sunday.

In one of the standout fixtures of Matchday 25, the Lagos side maintained their formidable home form, extending their winning run in front of their fans as the Oga Boys once again turned their ground into a fortress.

The contest was cagey for long spells, with both sides cancelling each other out in a largely uneventful first half. The breakthrough finally arrived just after the hour mark when Chidera Oparaocha was brought down in the box, prompting the referee to point to the spot. Joseph Arumala kept his composure, calmly dispatching the penalty to register his second consecutive home goal in the league and ignite celebrations in the stands.

Niger Tornadoes showed more ambition after falling behind, enjoying longer spells of possession and pushing Ikorodu City onto the back foot. Ahmadu Liman tested goalkeeper Michael Atata with a fierce effort, while Abdulrasheed Dabai flashed a dangerous delivery across the face of goal, but the visitors failed to apply the decisive touch.

Ikorodu City weathered the pressure and sealed the result late on. Captain Tosin Oyedokun released Arumala on the counter, and although the winger’s shot appeared harmless, it squirmed past the goalkeeper to complete his brace and put the game beyond reach. The win marked Ikorodu City’s eighth victory in their last ten home league matches and lifted them back to the summit of the NPFL table, at least temporarily.

Elsewhere, Nasarawa United missed the opportunity to go outright top as they were held to a 1–1 draw by Bayelsa United in Lafia. Victor John’s early opener for the hosts was cancelled out by Energy Otunuya just before halftime.

In Jos, substitute Sadiq Yusuf proved decisive as Plateau United claimed a crucial 1–0 victory over Kwara United in a tense relegation six-pointer. Another big result in the survival battle saw Kano Pillars edge defending champions Remo Stars 1–0, with Luis Dadong scoring the only goal of the game.

The Oriental derby between Abia Warriors and Rangers ended in a stalemate in Aba, while Warri Wolves and Elkanemi Warriors also played out a goalless draw in Ozoro. In Owerri, bottom-placed Kun Khalifat picked up a vital 2–0 win over Shooting Stars, courtesy of goals from James Ekebuike and Blessed Iyamu.

Meanwhile, the fixture between Wikki Tourists and Katsina United was abandoned due to poor visibility and will resume on Monday.
