NOC President Habu Gumel congratulates Flamingos, hails Tinubu's investment in sports

President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engineer Habu Gumel, has congratulated Nigeria’s Flamingos following their historic triumph at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The Flamingos defeated Japan 2-1 in the final on Saturday, November 7, to claim Nigeria’s first-ever title in the competition and become the first African nation to lift the trophy.

Gumel said the young players had demonstrated the resilience, determination and fighting spirit associated with Nigerians, adding that their achievement had established the country among the leading nations in global U-17 women’s football.

“I want to congratulate the girls for winning the FIFA U17 Women's World Cup and bringing glory to the nation.

“This win has once again shown that Nigeria is a country filled with enormous potential and world beaters,” he said.

The NOC president also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu for their investment in sports since the beginning of the current administration.

“This is a moment of fulfillment for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu because since the inception of this administration, they have invested hugely in sports.

“President Tinubu brought back the National Sports Commission (NSC), which is yielding results; and don't forget in a hurry that the President and his wife hosted the Super Falcons when they won their 10th WAFON title last year.

“I believe that this is the beginning of greater things for sports under the current government and they should expect more laurels in the coming days,” Gumel added.

He also commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission, particularly its Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their contributions to the development of Nigerian sports.

The Flamingos’ victory represents a landmark achievement for the country’s women’s football and adds another major title to Nigeria’s record in FIFA youth competitions.
