D'Tigers storm into Afrobasket quarterfinals with dominant win over Cameroon
Nigeria’s D’Tigers booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket in Angola with a commanding 99-90 victory over Cameroon in their final group game on Sunday.
The encounter saw both sides come in with two wins apiece. A spot in the last eight was on the line, but it was Nigeria who rose to the occasion at the Pavilhão Multiusos de Luanda.
Cameroon made a bright start, racing to a 5-0 lead in the opening minutes. But that was as good as it got as D’Tigers quickly took control to edge the first quarter 28-25.
From there, coach Mohammed Abdulrahman’s men stepped on the gas. The second quarter was one-way traffic, with Nigeria outscoring Cameroon 32-16 to take a commanding 60-41 lead into halftime.
The third quarter followed the same script, as D’Tigers’ relentless offense opened up an insurmountable gap with a 26-12 run. Cameroon rallied late, dominating the final quarter 37-13 to trim the deficit, but the damage had long been done.
Statistically, Nigeria was clinical. They converted 57.4% of their 68 field goal attempts, pulled down 37 rebounds, and registered 21 assists, 13 steals, and three blocks. Cameroon managed a higher number of attempts (78) but shot just 41%, adding 31 rebounds, 16 assists, 10 steals, and 16 costly turnovers.
Josh Okogie led Nigeria with 16 points, while Caleb Agada, Stan Okoye, Christian Mekowulu, Ike Nwamu, and Martins Igbanu all posted double-digit scores in a balanced team effort. For Cameroon, Fabien Ateba top-scored with 19 points, supported by Yves Missi (18), Jeremiah Hill (16), and Bikantchou Gbetkom (10).
The result sealed Nigeria’s dominance in the group, as the 2015 champions finished top with three wins from three. Cameroon followed in second, defending champions, Tunisia settled for third, while Madagascar bowed out without a single win.
