Dakar 2026: Skukurat Mayowa gets boxing bye as track, field, cycling begin

Nigeria's campaign at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal has entered a crucial phase, with the nation's remaining athletes gearing up for action in boxing, cycling, and athletics as Team Nigeria hunts for its first medal of the Games.

Boxing: Shukurat Mayowa Awaits Quarter-Final Opponent

In the boxing ring, 17-year-old Shukurat Mayowa—Nigeria's sole boxing representative—has received a direct bye into the quarter-finals of the women’s 48kg event.

She will watch closely as Algeria’s Bouthaina Bensalah and Thailand’s Pemika Payungkasem square off in a preliminary bout on Sunday afternoon at the Dakar Expo Centre (DEX Pavillon C). Mayowa will face the winner of that clash in her opening bout on Tuesday, 10 November.

Semi-finals: Wednesday, 11 November

Final: Thursday, 12 November

Cycling & Athletics Take Center Stage

Following the conclusion of the beach volleyball, table tennis, and swimming events, Nigeria's hopes now rest on cycling, athletics, and boxing.

Cycling: Ringnan Danjuma, 17, represents Nigeria as the nation's sole cyclist, competing in the women’s individual time trial.

Athletics: Historically one of Nigeria's strongest medal-producing sports at the Youth Olympic Games, the track and field contingent features nine athletes competing across a packed three-day schedule (8–10 November):

Gift Bright (Men’s 100m)

Rosemary Nwankwo (Women’s 100m)

Faith Ezechukwu (Women’s 400m)

Gift Oghenerunor (Men’s 400m hurdles)

Rita Chisom Ezeh (Women’s 400m hurdles)

 Obanla Ehuwa (Men’s high jump)

Godswill Nkemakolam (Men’s javelin)

Treasure Omosivwe (Women’s 100m hurdles)

 Praise Ugoh (Women’s shot put)

With events running through the final days of the Games, Team Nigeria is poised for a strong finish in Senegal as they push to break onto the podium.
