Daniel Igali arrives Kazakhstan for UWW Meetings, Elective Congress ahead of World Championships

Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Development and United World Wrestling (UWW) Bureau Member, Hon. Baraladei Daniel Igali, has arrived in Astana, Kazakhstan, ahead of the 2026 World Wrestling Championships for a series of high-level engagements with the sport’s international governing body.

Igali’s visit will include participation in two UWW Bureau meetings and the organisation’s Elective Congress scheduled for October 23, 2026.

The meetings are expected to deliberate on key issues relating to the governance, administration and development of international wrestling, with discussions focusing on policies that could influence the sport’s future growth and global competitiveness.

As a member of the UWW Technical Commission, Igali is expected to contribute to discussions on Olympic qualification pathways, competition regulations and measures to promote fairness and equal opportunities for wrestling nations worldwide.

The former Olympic wrestling champion has consistently advocated equitable representation and resource distribution in international sports, particularly for developing countries. He maintains that limited funding and inadequate infrastructure should not prevent African nations and other less-resourced countries from competing effectively at the highest level.

At the Elective Congress, Igali is also expected to champion institutional stability, continuity and sustainable development programmes aimed at strengthening wrestling administration and supporting the sport’s long-term growth.

Beyond his international responsibilities, the Bayelsa sports commissioner sees the engagements as an opportunity to acquire valuable knowledge and experience that could improve sports administration in the state, particularly in technical management, athlete development, competition organisation and the adoption of global best practices in sports governance.

The experience is also expected to support Bayelsa State’s preparations for hosting the 2028 National Sports Festival, as the state government continues to pursue its sports development agenda and investment in sporting infrastructure.

Igali expressed appreciation to Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, for his continued support and understanding of the importance of international engagements, noting that such opportunities could contribute to the advancement of sports administration and development in the state.

Meanwhile, Team Nigeria will be seeking to end a three-year medal drought at the World Wrestling Championships, with the country’s wrestlers aiming to return to the global podium.

Igali reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that his responsibilities within the international wrestling governing body deliver tangible benefits for sports development in Bayelsa State and Nigeria as a whole.
