Enyimba FC appoint Uche Okechukwu as Sporting Director
NPFL giants Enyimba of Aba have confirmed the appointment of former Super Eagles defender Uche Okechukwu MON as the club’s new Sporting Director.
Popularly known as the “Gentle Giant,” Okechukwu takes over the role following the recent resignation of Ifeanyi Ekuweme, with the Aba-based side moving quickly to entrust the position to another former Nigerian international.
“Enyimba Football Club is pleased to officially announce the appointment of former Super Eagles defender and club legend, Uche Okechukwu MON, fondly known as the ‘Gentle Giant,’ as the new Sporting Director of the club,” the club said in a statement released on Saturday.
The statement added that Enyimba chairman, Nwankwo Kanu, has strong confidence in Okechukwu’s capacity to help restore the club to the summit of domestic and continental football.
A revered figure in Nigerian and African football, Okechukwu enjoyed an illustrious playing career that spanned both local and international stages. In Europe, he featured prominently for Brøndby IF in Denmark and Turkish giants Fenerbahçe SK, earning widespread admiration for his leadership, composure, and defensive prowess.
At home, he played for Enyimba FC, Flash Flamingoes FC, and Iwuanyanwu Nationale, winning honours and cementing his status as one of the era’s standout defenders. On the international scene, Okechukwu was a key member of Nigeria’s golden generation that lifted the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and represented the country at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Nigeria’s first-ever appearance at the global showpiece.
Prior to his appointment as Sporting Director, Okechukwu had already been part of Enyimba’s board under the current management, a role that further strengthens his understanding of the club’s structure and ambitions.
