Sporting Lagos end ownership stake in Danish club Aarhus Fremad
Nigeria National League (NNL) side Sporting Lagos have announced the conclusion of their ownership stake in Danish club Aarhus Fremad, bringing an end to a partnership that began in March 2023.
The Lagos-based club, through its owner Shola Akinlade, had acquired a majority stake in Aarhus Fremad with the aim of creating a clear development pathway for Nigerian talent to Europe. In a statement released on Friday, Sporting Lagos confirmed that while the ownership arrangement has ended, both clubs will continue to maintain the relationship built during the partnership.
“In 2023, we announced an ownership stake in Aarhus Fremad with a mission to create a trusted pathway for our best talent from Nigeria to Europe,” the club stated. “Over this time, we’ve built strong relationships across the football world through transfers, trials and partnerships. What started as a single pathway has grown into multiple routes for our players, giving us greater flexibility and reach.”
Sporting Lagos noted that the experience reinforced the importance of strengthening the talent pipeline at home. “Along the way, we’ve learned that the greatest value and impact sit at the start of the journey, in the talent pipeline in Nigeria,” the statement added.
The club highlighted key milestones achieved during the partnership, including two Sporting Lagos players representing Nigeria at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in the past two years. In 2025, Mukhtar Adamu joined Norwegian side Odds BK, where he went on to win the club’s Young Player of the Year award, while four additional international transfers have been completed and are set to be announced.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Sporting Lagos praised the leadership at Aarhus Fremad. “From day one, Lars and the leadership team have been thoughtful, open and deeply collaborative. Beyond the football, we’ve loved the warmth of the Aarhus community and the connection with the fans. It’s been special to feel that shared purpose on and off the pitch,” the statement concluded.
During Sporting Lagos’ period of ownership, Aarhus Fremad, who had spent nearly two decades in Denmark’s third tier, secured promotion to the second division. Several Nigerian players also passed through the club, including Segun Olalere and Christian Nwoke, while academy prospects Abubakar Haruna and Solomon Adabo participated in a training programme in 2025.
Sporting Lagos say they will now redirect their focus toward making a greater impact within Nigerian football, with renewed emphasis on talent identification and player development at home.
