Governor Sanwo-Olu hails Rukayat Suleimon's historic gold at World Sambo Cup
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated Rukayat Suleimon for making history as the first female blind sambist in the world to win a gold medal at the World Sambo Cup held in Yerevan, Armenia.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the governor praised Suleimon for her outstanding achievement at the global competition organized by the International Sambo Federation.
Sanwo-Olu commended Suleimon—also a Lagos State judo champion—for her resilience and determination in overcoming challenges to secure victory. Competing in the women’s 54kg category, she triumphed over opponents from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan to claim the gold medal.
Describing her feat as historic, the governor noted that Suleimon is not only the first Nigerian and African to win gold at an international sambo event but also the first female blind sambist globally to achieve such a milestone.
He said her success reflects the spirit of excellence that defines Nigeria and highlights the rewards of dedication, preparation, and perseverance. Sanwo-Olu further described Suleimon as an inspiration and role model for young girls across the country, encouraging them to pursue their dreams with confidence.
“We are so proud of her,” the governor added, celebrating her achievement as a moment of pride for Lagos, Nigeria, and the African continent.
