FIFA clearance opens Super Eagles door for Arthur Okonkwo

Nigeria’s rebuilding process under head coach Eric Chelle has received a timely lift following FIFA’s approval of former Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo’s switch of allegiance, handing the Super Eagles a valuable new option ahead of next month’s international invitational tournament in Jordan.

The 24 year old shot stopper is now eligible for immediate selection and is expected to link up with the squad when camping opens on March 24 in Amman.

Nigeria will face Iran on March 27 before taking on hosts Jordan four days later at the Amman International Stadium, in fixtures that form part of Chelle’s efforts to reshape the team after missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Okonkwo’s clearance could prove particularly significant given the uncertainty surrounding current first choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who is presently without a club.

With concerns over match sharpness in goal, the arrival of the Wrexham based goalkeeper offers renewed competition and depth in a key department as Chelle continues to fine tune his squad.

FIFA formally approved Okonkwo’s nationality switch in January 2026, ending years of eligibility discussions.

Born in England to Nigerian parents, he previously represented England at various youth levels, but recent engagements with the Super Eagles’ technical crew, including talks with Chelle during last year’s Unity Cup in London, helped convince him to commit his international future to Nigeria.

Although administrative delays ruled him out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the upcoming matches in Amman now present Okonkwo with a golden opportunity to make his senior debut.

His arrival not only strengthens Nigeria’s goalkeeping unit but also signals Chelle’s determination to build a more competitive and future ready Super Eagles side.
