Flying Eagles soar into WAFU-B U-20 semifinals with dominant win over Togo
Nigeria's Flying Eagles have secured an early place in the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFU B U20 Championship after a convincing 3-0 victory over Togo in their second Group B match on Thursday.
Abdu Maikaba's side made it two wins from two, building on their entertaining 4-2 triumph over Ghana in the tournament opener to seal qualification for the last four with one group game still to play.
Once again, Abdulmuiz Adeleke stole the spotlight. The in-form forward continued his remarkable scoring streak, netting twice for the second successive match after his brace against Ghana. Substitute Abdoulaye Agbegoye added a late goal to cap an impressive all-round performance by the seven-time African champions.
Nigeria controlled possession for long periods in the opening half but found it difficult to unlock a disciplined Togolese defence. Despite dictating the tempo, the Flying Eagles nearly fell behind in the 38th minute when Togo wasted a gilt-edged opportunity, firing wide after catching the Nigerian backline off balance.
The game opened up towards the end of the first half as both teams searched for the breakthrough, but neither could find the finishing touch before the interval.
The deadlock was finally broken just a minute into the second half. Adeleke latched onto his chance and finished with composure to hand Nigeria the lead and continue his rich vein of form in front of goal.
The striker doubled the advantage in the 58th minute with a superb solo effort, racing clear of the defence before calmly rounding the goalkeeper and slotting into an empty net. The goal took his tally to four in the tournament, making him one of the standout performers so far.
With the match firmly in their grasp, Maikaba refreshed his squad, and one of his substitutes wasted little time making an impact.
Agbegoye, who had replaced Adeleke, wrapped up the victory five minutes from time, finishing neatly to make it 3-0 and underline Nigeria's superiority.
The comprehensive win leaves the Flying Eagles comfortably at the top of Group B and through to the semi-finals with a game to spare.
Nigeria will round off their group-stage campaign against Burkina Faso on Sunday, aiming to preserve their perfect record and head into the knockout stage full of confidence and momentum.
