Glasgow 2026: Team Nigeria enjoys flying start to day five
Team Nigeria began Day Five of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on a positive note, delivering a string of impressive performances on the track and in the pool as several athletes booked places in the next round and kept the country's medal hopes alive.
Leading the charge was Edidiong Udo, who made an instant statement in his first international 400 metres race for Nigeria. The rising quarter-miler powered to victory in Heat One with a time of 45.73 seconds, finishing nearly a second ahead of the field to secure a place in the semifinals.
His qualification means Nigeria will have two contenders in the men's 400m semifinals, with Udo joining fellow countryman Samuel Ogazi as the duo look to challenge for a place in the final.
The women's 400 metres also produced encouraging results for Team Nigeria. Esther Elo Joseph booked automatic qualification for the semifinals in her debut Commonwealth Games appearance after finishing third in her heat in 52.82 seconds.
Veteran runner Patience Okon-George also progressed, clocking 53.27 seconds to finish fourth in her heat. Together with Ella Onojuvwevwo, Nigeria will have three athletes competing in the women's 400m semifinals.
There was more good news from the swimming pool as Abduljabar Adama and Colins Ebingha both advanced to the men's 50m butterfly semifinals. Adama touched the wall in 23.99 seconds to finish fourth in his heat, while Ebingha followed closely in fifth with a time of 24.01 seconds, ensuring Nigeria maintains a strong presence in the event.
As the Games move into the evening session, attention shifts to the athletics track where Nigeria's sprint stars will continue their pursuit of medals.
National record holder Kayinsola Ajayi, alongside Favour Ashe and Nicholas Fakorede, will compete in the men's 100 metres semifinals, while Rosemary Chukwuma, Miracle Ezechukwu and Blessing Ogundiran will carry Nigeria's hopes in the women's event. A top performance in the semifinals will earn each athlete a coveted place in Tuesday night's finals.
Elsewhere, Oyesade Olatoye will bid for a medal in the women's hammer throw final, Patricia Mbata steps into the ring for her women's 75kg boxing quarterfinal, while Team Nigeria's wheelchair women's 3x3 basketball side takes on Australia.
With six gold medals already in the bag and several more medal opportunities on the horizon, Team Nigeria heads into the remainder of Day Five full of confidence as the quest for Commonwealth Games glory gathers momentum.
