Injury forces Israel Okon out of Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
Team Nigeria has suffered a major blow ahead of the athletics programme at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with rising sprint sensation Israel Okon ruled out of the competition due to a hamstring injury.
The 19-year-old announced his withdrawal on Monday, ending hopes of competing in the men's 200 metres and the 4x100m relay, where he was expected to play a key role in Nigeria's medal ambitions.
Okon's absence comes just days before the men's 200m gets underway and leaves a significant gap in the country's sprint team as coaches are forced to rethink their relay plans.
Despite the disappointment, the national 100m champion remained optimistic, choosing to reflect on what has been a remarkable breakthrough season.
"First and foremost, I thank God Almighty for His grace and blessings. I'm truly grateful to have achieved my first sub-10 in the 100m and, after three years of running 20.87s in the 200m, I finally broke the 20-second barrier.
"Unfortunately, I won't be competing at the Commonwealth Games due to a hamstring injury, but I'm focused on my recovery and coming back stronger next season.
"Wishing all my friends and Team Nigeria the very best. Go make history and make Nigeria proud."
Although his Glasgow campaign has been cut short, Okon has enjoyed a memorable 2026 season that firmly established him among Nigeria's brightest sprint prospects.
In May, he stormed to a personal best of 9.91 seconds in the 100 metres at the LSU Bernie Moore Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, before producing another sub-10 performance of 9.99 seconds at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track Facility in Lexington.
The teenager also achieved another career milestone by breaking the 20-second barrier in the 200 metres for the first time, clocking a personal best of 19.94 seconds during the NCAA East First Round in Lexington.
His withdrawal is a setback for Team Nigeria, particularly in the men's 4x100m relay, where his speed and form had made him a strong contender for the quartet.
With Okon unavailable, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the coaching crew are expected to reshuffle their relay squad from the available pool of Kayinsola Ajayi, Fakorede Adekalu, Udodi Onwuzurike, Alaba Akintola and Favour Ashe as Nigeria continues its pursuit of medals in Glasgow.
