Ivory Coast Wonderkid Yan Diomande Breaks Sunday Oliseh’s Long-Standing World Cup Record
Ivory Coast teenager Yan Diomande has etched his name into FIFA World Cup history after surpassing a long-standing record previously held by former Nigeria captain Sunday Oliseh.
The 19-year-old winger has been one of the standout young stars of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the impressive form that saw him emerge as the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season with RB Leipzig into football's biggest tournament.
Diomande arrived at the World Cup as one of Africa's most exciting prospects and has quickly justified the hype with a series of eye-catching performances for the Elephants.
The youngster announced himself on the global stage by winning the Man of the Match award in Ivory Coast's opening 1-0 victory over Ecuador. Although Amad Diallo scored the decisive goal, Diomande's creativity, direct running and ability to trouble defenders earned widespread praise.
He followed that display with another influential performance against Germany, playing a key role in Ivory Coast's only goal despite the Elephants suffering defeat.
According to Opta, Diomande has completed 16 successful dribbles in his first two matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup—the highest total by any player at the tournament so far.
More significantly, it represents the most successful dribbles completed by an African player under the age of 20 at a FIFA World Cup since records began in 1966.
The achievement also sees Diomande break a record that had belonged to Nigerian legend Sunday Oliseh for more than three decades.
Oliseh, renowned for his powerful midfield displays and leadership qualities, completed eight dribbles across Nigeria's opening two matches against Bulgaria and Argentina at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. Despite playing primarily as a defensive midfielder, the former Super Eagles captain showcased remarkable technical ability during Nigeria's memorable debut appearance on the global stage.
His mark stood unchallenged for 32 years before Diomande's emergence in North America.
The Ivory Coast starlet now has the opportunity to chase even more records when the Elephants face Curacao in their final Group stage fixture.
Ivory Coast are favourites to secure victory and confirm their place in the knockout rounds, while Diomande will be aiming to continue his impressive run of performances.
Another notable milestone within his reach is the record for the most successful dribbles in a single World Cup match, currently held by Nigerian icon Jay-Jay Okocha. The former Super Eagles playmaker completed 15 successful dribbles during Nigeria's Round of 16 clash against Italy at the 1994 World Cup, a benchmark that remains one of the most remarkable individual displays in tournament history.
Diomande could also challenge the record for the most successful dribbles by a teenager in a single World Cup match, set by Germany's Jamal Musiala, who completed 12 dribbles against Costa Rica at the 2022 World Cup.
For now, however, the young Ivorian can celebrate a place in the history books after eclipsing one of African football's most enduring World Cup records, further cementing his reputation as one of the brightest talents on the continent.
