Kennedy Boboye breaks silence as NPFL slams heavy sanctions on Bendel Insurance
Bendel Insurance head coach Kennedy Boboye has firmly denied any wrongdoing following the Nigeria Premier Football League’s decision to hand him a staggering 17-match suspension over alleged misconduct.
The controversy stems from Insurance’s 2-2 draw against Plateau United, after which Boboye was reported to have aggressively confronted and assaulted match officials. The NPFL wasted little time in delivering its verdict, finding the two-time league-winning coach guilty of improper conduct in breach of its disciplinary and fair play regulations.
But Boboye has pushed back strongly against the ruling, insisting that his actions have been misrepresented.
“I only went to ask him about the penalty he awarded against us. That’s all,” he stated, while also releasing video footage of the incident in a bid to support his claim.
The severity of the punishment has since sparked debate across the local football scene, with some observers questioning whether the sanctions are excessive particularly if evidence does not conclusively support the allegations.
The fallout extends beyond the dugout. Bendel Insurance have been hit with a ₦5 million fine, while the NPFL has ordered the club to play their next three home fixtures behind closed doors at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. The decision was attributed to crowd-related concerns and the club’s handling of the situation.
As a result, upcoming clashes against Abia Warriors, Katsina United, and league leaders Remo Stars will be played without fans in attendance an added blow for a side currently sitting seventh on the table with 46 points from 32 matches.
With tensions still simmering, Bendel Insurance are expected to file an appeal to the NFF Disciplinary Committee within the stipulated 48-hour window, setting the stage for what could be a defining off-pitch battle in their season.
