The Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and social Development has commended the organisers of the International Day of the Girl Child celebration and Soccer Queens Awards 2026 for their commitment to empowering girls, promoting women's football and recognising outstanding achievements in the sport.

The event, held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Lagos Anglican Girls' Grammar School, Surulere, brought together the celebration of the girl child and the recognition of outstanding players and football personalities across the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership, Championship and Nationwide divisions.

The Commissioner congratulated the award recipients, describing the recognition of their achievements as an important way to encourage excellence and inspire young girls to pursue their ambitions in football and other sporting activities.

He also praised Soccer Queens for creating a platform that celebrates talent, dedication and the contributions of individuals working to advance women's football in Nigeria.

Reaffirming the state government's support for the initiative, the Commissioner assured the organisers that Lagos State welcomes the awards and is ready to identify with their vision.

“Lagos State is home to the Soccer Queens Awards,” he declared, signalling the state's commitment to supporting the initiative.

The endorsement provides encouragement for the organisers as they continue to build a platform dedicated to celebrating excellence, promoting women's football and inspiring the next generation of female athletes.

The joint celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child and Soccer Queens Awards 2026 highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for girls to participate in sports, discover their talents and build confidence through football.

By recognising awardees across the three divisions of the NWFL, the ceremony also showcased the depth of talent, dedication and commitment within Nigerian women's football.

The initiative further emphasised the need for sustained support from government, football administrators, clubs, sponsors and other stakeholders to expand opportunities for girls and women in sports.

The 2026 edition of the Soccer Queens Awards was held under the theme, “More Than a Game — A Brighter Tomorrow,” reflecting its commitment to celebrating achievements, honouring contributions and inspiring future generations.

The Commissioner's commendation and welcoming message are expected to encourage the organisers to sustain their efforts in promoting women's football and providing platforms where outstanding performances receive recognition.

The organisers expressed hope that continued collaboration with stakeholders would strengthen the awards and broaden their impact on girls' participation in sports and the development of women's football in Nigeria.

Through initiatives such as the Soccer Queens Awards, stakeholders aim to create greater visibility for female footballers, celebrate those contributing to the game's growth and inspire more girls to pursue their sporting dreams.
