US-Based Teenage Fencer chooses to represent Nigeria
American-based teenage fencer, Peluola Akinbamiro, has made the exciting decision to represent Nigeria on the international stage.
The 13-year-old, who trains at the Fort Bend Fencing Academy in Houston, revealed that her deep love for Nigeria motivated her to approach the Nigerian Fencing Federation in hopes of making her international debut for the country.
Adeyinka Samuel, President of the Nigerian Fencing Federation, expressed his enthusiasm over Akinbamiro's choice, emphasizing that more talented fencers from abroad are eager to represent Nigeria.
"I am thrilled by Akinbamiro's decision. Nigeria has immense potential to compete with the best globally, and having fencers like her will inspire our homegrown athletes to aim higher. Her addition to the team will undoubtedly enhance the sport’s growth, and we are optimistic about the medals she can bring, particularly with our eyes set on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games," Samuel said.
He also haillexd the increasing number of athletes recognizing their roots and joining efforts to advance the sport in Nigeria.
"This year, we will host the African Championships, and next year, the Commonwealth Championships. Akinbamiro, with her experience and young age, will be a valuable addition as we set our sights on the 2028 and 2032 Olympic Games," Samuel added.
Akinbamiro, who developed her passion for fencing after watching thrilling competitions like the World Cup, shared her excitement about embracing the sport and her heritage. "Fencing has taught me patience and self-awareness, and representing Nigeria means a lot to me because it's my motherland. I am proud to wear Nigeria’s colours in international competitions," she said.
Akinbamiro also expressed her aspirations to excel in both fencing and education. "My goal is to become the best fencer I can be while pursuing higher education. I want to reach the highest levels in fencing. My parents’ unwavering support has been my biggest motivation—they have dedicated their time and resources to help me succeed in this sport. I am thrilled by the uniqueness of fencing and the excitement of competing with a sword," she added.
With Akinbamiro's talent and determination, Nigeria's fencing scene is set to gain even greater recognition on the global stage.
