Bose Odusanya made history once again at the 56th Molade Okoya-Thomas National Table Tennis Championships, securing her record-breaking 10th consecutive Women’s Singles title over the weekend in Lagos.

National champion Matthew Kuti also celebrated a major achievement, claiming his first senior Men’s Singles title with a dominant 4-1 victory over Kwara’s Abbulbasit Abdulfatai.

Despite being seeded fourth, Odusanya raised her level of play to storm into the final, where she triumphed 4-1 (8-11, 11-4, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8) over Amina Fashola of NSCDC. This victory made her the first player in the history of the competition to secure 10 consecutive titles.

Kuti, the top seed in the Men’s Singles, delighted the audience, including Ogun State First Lady Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun and former Kwara State First Lady Mrs. Oluwatoyin Sarakin, with his impressive performance. After dropping the first game 7-11, Kuti bounced back to win four straight games (7-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-5, 11-9), claiming the Men’s Singles title.

Odusanya expressed that this year’s win was the toughest of her career, noting that it was the first time the tournament had been played as a national event. She commended Fashola for her spirited effort in the final.

For Kuti, the victory added another title to his collection of domestic achievements, and he also acknowledged the significance of the tournament's elevation to national status.

In the U-15 finals, Usman Ayoola of Oyo State claimed the boys' title with a 3-0 win (11-8, 11-8, 12-10) over his fellow Oyo State player Ahmed Ayatullahi. In the girls' category, Abia’s Chinenye Okafor came from two sets down to secure a 3-2 win (11-7, 11-6, 7-11, 3-11, 11-8) against Oyo State's Aduke Ajayi, clinching the girls' U-15 championship.

Ogun State First Lady Mrs. Abiodun praised the Okoya-Thomas family for their commitment to the annual event, especially for making it a national competition. She also envisioned the tournament growing into an international event, recognizing its status as Africa's longest-running table tennis competition.

Deji Okoya-Thomas, in his remarks, expressed confidence in the future of the tournament, vowing to continue enhancing its quality. He was encouraged by the impressive turnout and high level of play in its first year as a national event.
