Rivers Angels claim 10th President Federation Cup title in dramatic fashion

Rivers Angels pulled off a thrilling comeback to clinch their 10th President Federation Cup title, edging Nasarawa Amazons 4-2 on penalties at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

Despite dominating much of the contest, the Port Harcourt-based side had to dig deep after falling two goals behind in the first half.

Nasarawa Amazons struck early, with Rukayat Shobowale capitalizing on a defensive error to open the scoring in the 7th minute. The forward doubled the lead just 10 minutes later, putting the Lafia side firmly in control going into halftime.

Undeterred, Rivers Angels emerged from the break with renewed intensity. Their pressure paid off in the 57th minute when Taiwo Ajibade fired home to reduce the deficit. Just five minutes later, former Flamingos midfielder Taiwo Afolabi lofted a brilliant lob past the Amazons' goalkeeper to level the match at 2-2.

With no further goals in regulation time, the final was decided by a penalty shootout.

Nasarawa Amazons stumbled early in the shootout, with Esther Adesoji missing their opening kick. Rivers Angels, in contrast, were clinical, converting their first three attempts. Goalkeeper Anderline Mgbechi then denied Ayatsea Hembafan before stepping up to take and score the decisive penalty herself, sealing a 4-2 shootout victory.

The win adds to Rivers Angels’ impressive Federation Cup legacy, having previously lifted the trophy in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2024.
