Rivers United earn first CAF Champions League point

Rivers United picked up their first point of the 2025 CAF Champions League campaign after battling to a goalless draw against Zambian side Power Dynamos on Saturday in Ndola.

After opening defeats to Pyramids FC and RS Berkane, a positive result became crucial for Finidi George’s men and they responded with a disciplined and resilient performance at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

Goalkeeper Osagie Onisodumeya, who had been culpable in the club’s previous continental outing, returned between the sticks and produced a commanding display. Boluwaji Sholumade partnered Seyi Oguntayo in midfield, while Maclyn Biokpo led the line for the Pride of Rivers.

Rivers United endured a difficult first half, coming under sustained pressure from the hosts. Onisodumeya was called into action repeatedly, making three important saves, while Stephen Manyo marshalled the defence with authority to keep the Nigerians level. The visitors failed to register a shot on target before the interval.

Power Dynamos continued to push for a breakthrough after the restart, but Rivers United remained compact and resolute. Onisodumeya once again stood tall, producing a series of timely interventions to frustrate the Zambians.

Rivers United eventually showed more attacking intent and recorded their first shot on target in the 68th minute, when Dynamos goalkeeper Willard Mwanza parried Friday Ubong’s effort. Both sides, however, could not find a decisive touch, and the contest ended goalless, a result that earned Rivers United their first point of the group stage while extending Dynamos’ wait for their first goal of the campaign.

Rivers United will now turn their attention to the return fixture, as they host Power Dynamos in a Matchday Four encounter at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo next weekend.
