NPFL fine lands on Remo Stars with relocation to Ibadan over crowd violence
Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions Remo Stars have been fined a total of ₦7 million and ordered to play their remaining home matches at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan following crowd trouble and vandalism during their Matchday 20 clash against Ikorodu City.
Although Remo Stars claimed a 1–0 victory in the fixture, the match was overshadowed by disorder as home supporters hurled objects onto the pitch, forcing multiple stoppages.
Tensions escalated after the final whistle when supporters of both clubs clashed, leading to the vandalisation of Ikorodu City’s team bus and several vehicles belonging to their fans as they exited the Ikenne community.
In a ruling announced on Thursday, the NPFL disciplinary body sanctioned the champions for multiple breaches of the league’s Framework and Rules, citing inadequate security arrangements and failure to properly control supporters, which resulted in a breakdown of law and order.
“Remo Stars have been charged for breaching the NPFL Framework and Rules in the course of their Matchday 20 fixture against Ikorodu City on January 14, 2026,” the league said in a statement.
“The club failed to provide adequate and effective security, leading to a brawl between fans of both clubs, injuries to away supporters and damage to vehicles. Remo Stars also failed to ensure proper conduct of their supporters, who threw objects onto the pitch and harassed match officials, causing repeated stoppages.
“Furthermore, supporters brought dangerous objects and weapons into the stadium, behaviour capable of bringing the game into disrepute.”
As part of the sanctions, the Ikenne-based club was fined ₦2 million for failure to provide adequate security, ₦1 million for throwing objects onto the field of play, ₦1 million for improper conduct of supporters, and ₦1 million for misconduct capable of bringing the league into disrepute. An additional ₦2 million was imposed as compensatory costs for damage to the away team’s bus and supporters’ vehicles.
The NPFL also ordered Remo Stars to relocate their remaining NPFL26 home fixtures to the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.
The banishment represents a major setback for the defending champions, who only recently returned to their renovated home ground after spending the first half of the season at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta. Rather than triggering a revival, the return has coincided with a difficult campaign, with Remo Stars currently 15th on the table after recording eight wins, 12 defeats and one draw.
