Senate names new Chairman of Sports Development Committee

In a minor reshuffle of its standing committees, the Senate on Tuesday appointed Senator Musa Garba Maidoki as the new Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Development. Senator Maidoki takes over from Senator Kawu Suleiman, who now chairs the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream).

The announcement was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the plenary, alongside several other changes to committee leadership. Akpabio also announced the creation of new committees, including the South East Development Commission and North Central Development Commission committees, with appointments made to oversee their operations.

This reshuffle aims to enhance the effectiveness of the Senate’s oversight functions while aligning committee leadership with the nation’s development priorities.

In the same session, Akpabio disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had signed five bills into law, including the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) Bill and the Federal Polytechnic Rano Bill, among others.

Additionally, President Tinubu’s nomination of Captain Chris Najomo as the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) was transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.

Akpabio praised Tinubu’s responsiveness and commended the Senate’s dedication to legislative work.
