Super Eagles friendly in limbo as Iran pulls out of Jordan Invitational tournament

Nigeria’s plans for international preparations during the upcoming FIFA window have been thrown into uncertainty after Nigeria Football Federation confirmed it is closely monitoring developments surrounding the withdrawal of Iran national football team from a proposed four-nation tournament in Jordan.

The Nigeria national football team had been scheduled to participate in the invitational competition in Amman, Jordan, where they were due to face Iran on March 27 before taking on the Jordan national football team four days later. The Costa Rica national football team was also expected to feature in the mini tournament.

However, the tournament’s structure has been disrupted after Iran reportedly pulled out due to escalating political and military tensions in the Middle East. The development has forced organisers to reconsider their plans, with discussions ongoing about possibly moving the fixtures to a European venue.

NFF Director of Communications Ademola Olajire confirmed that the federation is keeping a close watch on the evolving situation while maintaining communication with tournament organisers.

“The NFF and the organisers are watching developments with keen interest,” Olajire told PUNCH Sports Extra, noting that any decision on relocation or replacement teams lies solely with the organisers.

The regional tension intensified following reports that the United States and Israel carried out a joint offensive against Iran on February 28, sparking retaliatory attacks and leading to widespread security concerns, including airspace restrictions across parts of the Middle East.

With Iran’s withdrawal, organisers are now considering the possibility of staging a single friendly match between Nigeria and Jordan at a neutral venue in Europe if the original four-team tournament cannot go ahead.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau earlier stated that the federation still has time to assess the situation and determine the next step.

“We are monitoring the situation for now; we still have three weeks,” Gusau said.

Despite the uncertainty, securing at least one international friendly remains important for the Super Eagles as the three time African champions continue preparations for upcoming competitive fixtures.
