Super Six set as NWFL Premiership regular season ends
The curtain came down on the 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League Premiership regular season on Wednesday with emotional survival battles, stunning results, and the confirmation of the six teams relegated to the NWFL Championship.
Before the decisive final matchday, Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, FC Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and Abia Angels had already secured their places in the season-ending Super Six playoffs.
One of the biggest moments of the day came in Ikenne where Dannaz Ladies produced a spirited performance to preserve their top-flight status with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Remo Stars Ladies. Fatimoh Solaty, Zainab Raji, and Ajoke Akinbo were on target for the visitors, while Chiamaka Ojialor and an own goal from Miracle Omeke gave the hosts late hope in an entertaining contest.
In Akure, Sunshine Queens signed off their campaign with a 2-0 win against Confluence Queens, but the victory was not enough to save either side from relegation. Lolade Akintunde opened the scoring before Bunmi Adenuga sealed the result, as both clubs dropped to the second tier.
Osun Babes also endured heartbreak after suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat away to Delta Queens in Asaba. Titilayo Aweda grabbed a brace, while Anastasia Terfa completed the convincing victory.
In Benin City, Edo Queens rounded off their impressive regular season with a 2-1 triumph over fellow Super Six side Rivers Angels in a heated South-South derby. Atume Doosuur and Esther Inyang scored for the hosts, while Patience Otubo found the net for Rivers Angels.
FC Robo Queens also secured a statement win in Lagos, edging Nasarawa Amazons 2-1 thanks to goals from Opeyemi Ajakaye and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi. Ayatsea Hembafan scored the visitors’ only goal.
In Aba, Ahudiyannem Queens claimed local bragging rights after Loveth Edeh’s solitary strike handed them a narrow derby victory over Abia Angels.
Defending champions Bayelsa Queens ended the regular season on a surprising note, falling 1-0 to Ekiti Queens after Joke Adeyemo scored the decisive goal. In Owerri, Heartland Queens secured a slim 1-0 win over Adamawa Queens through Chimebere Opara’s effort.
Meanwhile, Pacesetter Queens and Naija Ratels shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw in Ibadan, with Samantha Victor canceling out Janet Achukwu’s opener.
At the end of a fiercely contested regular season, Pacesetter Queens, Naija Ratels, Castmog Ladies, Sunshine Queens, Osun Babes, and Confluence Queens were officially relegated to the NWFL Championship.
With the regular campaign now complete, attention turns to the highly anticipated Super Six playoffs, where Nigeria’s next women’s football champions will be decided.
