Victor Osimhen leads charge as Frank Onyeka lifts Championship crown in stellar weekend for Nigerian stars
Nigerian stars once again lit up leagues across Europe with decisive performances, as Victor Osimhen returned in style, Frank Onyeka celebrated silverware in England, and several others delivered moments of quality for their clubs.
In Turkey, all eyes were on Victor Osimhen as Galatasaray sealed a commanding 3–0 win over fierce rivals Fenerbahce in a title-defining clash at Rams Park. After battling injuries for much of the season, the striker marked his return to the starting lineup with the opening goal, setting the tone for a dominant display. He could have doubled his tally but instead handed over penalty duties to Barış Alper Yılmaz, who made no mistake before Lucas Torreira wrapped up the victory late on.
Elsewhere in Turkey, Ibrahim Olawoyin impressed despite Rizespor’s 2–0 loss to Kayserispor, standing out as one of his side’s brightest performers on a difficult afternoon.
In England, Frank Onyeka capped off a remarkable campaign by helping Coventry City secure a 3–1 win over Wrexham in their coronation match, sealing the English Championship title. The Super Eagles midfielder was influential once again, providing an assist for the final goal in a performance that underlined his importance to Frank Lampard’s side.
Nottingham Forest’s Nigerian duo also made headlines in the Premier League, as Taiwo Awoniyi came off the bench to register an assist, while Ola Aina played his part in a commanding 5–0 away win over Sunderland, keeping things tight at the back. Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze featured from the start in Fulham’s narrow 1–0 victory over Aston Villa, although Alex Iwobi missed out due to injury.
In France, Tochukwu Nnadi enjoyed a memorable first start for Olympique Marseille, marking the occasion with an assist in their 1–1 draw against OGC Nice. His setup for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg gave Marseille the lead before Elye Wahi equalised with a composed panenka. Meanwhile, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro put in a strong shift for Pisa despite their 1–0 defeat to Parma in Italy.
Nathan Tella continued his fine form in Germany, providing an assist in Bayer Leverkusen’s 2–1 derby victory over Cologne. In Scotland, Afeez Aremu wasted no time making an impact, scoring the winning goal just 51 seconds into Aberdeen’s 1–0 win over Kilmarnock, a result that virtually secures their top-flight status.
There were also bright moments further afield. Emmanuel Godwin impressed for Pardubice in their 3–1 win over Zlin in the Czech league, while compatriot Abdullahi Tanko got on the scoresheet to seal the result. In Spain, Sadiq Umar continued his scoring run, finding the net in Valencia’s 2–1 victory over Girona, capping off another productive outing.
