Super Falcons shift focus to Zambia showdown as Nnadozie rallies team after Malawi defeat
Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie says the team has put behind its disappointing loss to Malawi and is fully focused on Saturday's crucial 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Group C clash against Zambia.
Nigeria's title defence suffered an early setback after a surprise 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday. The result leaves the defending champions under pressure, with victory over Zambia now essential to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive.
Speaking during a pre-match press conference in Rabat on Friday, Nnadozie expressed confidence that the squad has recovered mentally from the defeat and is determined to bounce back.
"The feeling is good. Everybody is happy. The past is in the past. We are focused on the next game. The spirit is very high, and we will fight to get the maximum points," she said.
The Brighton goalkeeper also appealed to Nigerian fans for continued support, insisting the disappointing result against Malawi was not a true reflection of the team's quality.
"It is important for the fans to know that what happened against Malawi was not intentional. This is football; sometimes you win, sometimes you lose."
Nnadozie endured an uncharacteristically difficult performance against Malawi and later issued a public apology to Nigerian supporters on social media, accepting responsibility for her display.
"That defeat doesn't make us a bad team, and it doesn't make me a bad player. Moving forward, we just have to keep our heads high and do what we know how to do best," she said.
"We didn't get to this level by mistake. This is not the first time I've made mistakes in a game. I have to keep my head down and make sure it doesn't happen again."
The 25-year-old also thanked fans for standing by the team despite the setback, promising a stronger response against Zambia.
"I want to thank everyone who believes in us, wishes us well, and continues to pray for the team. We have learned a lot from the last game, and hopefully we will get things right in the next match."
The Super Falcons will now look to respond with a convincing performance against the Copper Queens as they bid to revive their WAFCON title defence and secure a place in the knockout stage.
