WAFU-B Qualifiers: Edo Queens ready for ASEC Mimosa test, says Boboye
Edo Queens of Benin City have intensified preparations for their second fixture at the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU-B qualifying tournament in Burkina Faso, with stand-in technical manager Kennedy Boboye declaring that the Nigerian champions will approach their clash against Côte d’Ivoire champions ASEC Mimosas with the same winning mentality that inspired their emphatic opening victory.
The reigning NWFL champions announced their arrival in style on Monday, thrashing AS Garde Nationale of Niger Republic 7-0 to make a strong statement of intent in the competition.
Boboye said the commanding victory has boosted the confidence of his players, but stressed that the team must maintain its intensity and focus against a more demanding ASEC Mimosas side.
“Let me commend the girls for a job well done. I was not surprised by the goals because we did something similar during the Super Six and in some of the friendly matches we played before coming to Burkina Faso.
“I hope we will carry the same winning mentality into the remaining games. Our focus is now on tomorrow’s cracker,” he said.
The former champions’ coach also confirmed that Edo Queens have no injury concerns ahead of the crucial encounter, adding that the players are physically and mentally prepared for the challenge.
“We are ready for the game against the Côte d’Ivoire champions tomorrow. We have no injury concerns. We are mentally ready and the girls are in good shape,” Boboye stated.
However, he cautioned his players against complacency, insisting that ASEC Mimosas should not be underestimated despite Edo Queens’ impressive opening result.
“I have told them not to expect anything cheap or easy to grind. Our opponents are no pushovers. We must be conscious and courteous going up against the Ivorians tomorrow,” he added.
The encounter is scheduled to take place at the Stade 4 Août in Ouagadougou, with kick-off fixed for 4pm local time.
Edo Queens will be hoping to build on their impressive attacking display against AS Garde Nationale, with Chioma Moses, Atume Doosuur, Aminat Folorunsho and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi among the players who found the net in the seven-goal rout.
A victory over ASEC Mimosas would strengthen Edo Queens’ position in the race for qualification to the next stage, while keeping alive their ambition of reclaiming the WAFU-B crown and securing another appearance at the CAF Women’s Champions League.
