Wizkid’s Life Story to Premiere at 2025 Tribeca Film Festival
Afrobeats icon and global superstar Wizkid is about to make a different kind of debut not on stage, but on the silver screen. His much-anticipated documentary, "Long Live Lagos," will premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, offering fans an unprecedented look into the life and legacy of one of Africa’s most celebrated music exports.
Announced via Tribeca’s official Instagram page on Wednesday, the film will be featured in the festival’s documentary lineup during its annual showcase from June 4 to June 15 in New York City.
"Long Live Lagos" chronicles the rise of Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun better known as Wizkid from the busy streets of Surulere, Lagos, to the heights of global stardom. The film promises to blend raw, behind-the-scenes footage with rare personal moments, tracking his evolution from a young boy with a dream to a Grammy-winning artist shaping contemporary African music on the world stage.
Beyond music, the documentary explores Wizkid’s cultural footprint, his influence on global soundscapes, and his role in amplifying African identity through art.
The Tribeca Film Festival, co-founded by Robert De Niro, is renowned for spotlighting fresh, diverse voices in film and music. In recent years, it has become a stage for African creatives like Nigerian filmmaker Stephanie Linus, who served as a jury member in 2023 underscoring the continent’s growing influence in global storytelling.
At 34, Wizkid’s impact remains undeniable. Since his breakout with Superstar in 2011, he has released a string of acclaimed albums including Ayo, sounds from the Other Side, Made in Lagos, and More Love, Less Ego. His most recent project, Morayo a deeply personal tribute to his late mother, Jane Dolapo Balogun was released in November 2024 to widespread acclaim.
