Zimbabwe defeat Nigeria to seal top spot in Women's T20 Africa Qualifiers
Nigeria’s female cricket team, the Yellow Greens, suffered a heavy 10-wicket defeat to Zimbabwe in their final group game of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier on Wednesday.
Captain Peculiar Agboya won the toss and chose to bat, but Nigeria struggled to build momentum, eventually bowled out for 90 in 19.5 overs. Sarah Etim was the standout with 25 off 22 balls, supported by Oseyande Omonkhobhio (16) and Agboya herself (12). Zimbabwe’s Josephine Nkomo proved unplayable, tearing through the lineup with an outstanding spell of 5 for 6 in just four overs.
Zimbabwe made light work of the target. Openers Kelis Ndhlovu (44) and Modester Mupachikwa (36) put on an unbeaten 93-run partnership, sealing victory in just 14.2 overs.
The win confirmed Zimbabwe’s place at the top of Group A with six points, followed by Namibia (4). Nigeria finished third on two points, while Sierra Leone exited without a win. Zimbabwe and Namibia advanced to the semi-finals, where Zimbabwe will face Uganda and Namibia will take on Tanzania. The winners will book their tickets to the global qualifier in Nepal next January.
