2026 Commonwealth Games: President Tinubu to Receive King’s Baton Relay
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on July 1 receive the King’s Baton in Abuja, as Nigeria joins the global relay heralding the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The historic presentation will mark a key milestone in the countdown to the Games, with a delegation from Buckingham Palace expected to formally deliver the Baton.
The King’s Baton Relay, a core tradition of the Games, symbolises unity, peace, and shared Commonwealth values. For the first time, all 74 nations and territories will receive personalised Batons designed to reflect their unique cultures—each one eventually converging in Glasgow for the Opening Ceremony.
The National Sports Commission (NSC), in collaboration with the Royal Commonwealth Society, is also using the event to spotlight the “Commonwealth Clean Oceans Plastics Campaign,” which aims to remove one million pieces of plastic from marine environments through sport-driven activism and innovation.
